5. AWIS Effective Negotiation Event (11/10)

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is hosting the third installment in our 2009 Career Development Series "Effective Negotiation" on November 10th. Those in all fields are welcome to attend, as this workshop will be focusing on a general issue faced by women. For additional information, please visit the AWIS-Chicago website.

About the event:
Date: November 10, 2009
Time: 7:00-8:00 pm
Location: Room 350, Michael J. O'Connell Hall, 1036 W. Belden Ave., DePaul University, Lincoln Park Campus, Chicago
Topic: Negotiation in the Workplace
Cost: Free for AWIS members. $5 for non-members to be paid at the event. Please RSVP to awischicago@yahoo.com.
Who should attend: Anyone (male or female) interested in learning what women do differently than men when negotiating or resolving a conflict in the workplace. This event is open to professionals, graduate students and undergraduate students.
Talk overview: Negotiation influences tangible work outcomes (such as pay) but is also critical in daily activities of distributing tasks, building networks, and claiming resources. Research suggests that men are more likely than women to negotiate at work, which directly impacts a woman's success. Dr. Stuhlmacher will discuss findings on gender differences in negotiation with particular attention to negotiation situations where women are most successful and explanations for gender differences.

10. Postdoctoral Scholar in Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Neocortical Seizures at UofC

A postdoctoral position is available for research and training on the mechanisms of neocortical seizures. The goal is to identify the mechanisms that normally restrict the spatial spread of neural activity but that, when damaged, allows the propagation of neural activity which results in partial seizures. Studies will be carried out in a slice preparation taken from both human tissue and brain tissue from an animal model of partial seizures. The techniques we use include: electrophysiological measurement of neural activity and flavoprotein autofluorescence imaging.

The postdoc will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of neurobiologists, neurologists, computational neuroscientists, and mathematicians, although the work will be primarily neurobiology. Candidates must have a recent PhD in neuroscience. An appropriate combination of education, certifications, and/or relevant work experience will be considered. Salary will follow NIH guidelines commensurate with training and experience.

Please send a letter describing research experience/interest, CV, and contact information of three references electronically to Wim van Drongelen at cdeluca@peds.bsd.uchicago.edu, or by mail to Wim van Drongelen, PhD, KCBD Room 4124, 900 E. 57th Street, Chicago, Illinois 60637.
